Pure luxury… or so much more?
A massage during pregnancy, or even a massage in general, is often seen as a luxury or simply as "a little treat for yourself." And of course, it is. It's relaxing, enjoyable, and gives you a chance to switch off for a while. In today's busy world, who wouldn't want that?
But is it really just about relaxation and indulgence? Or is there much more to it?

Lowering cortisol levels
Everyone knows that a massage is relaxing. After a massage, you often feel completely calm and at ease. That feeling isn't just by chance. During a massage, your body is working behind the scenes in several beneficial ways.
Scientific research has shown that massage therapy can significantly reduce cortisol levels. Cortisol is your body's primary stress hormone. While it's essential for survival, chronically elevated cortisol levels can have negative effects on your health.
Massage helps lower cortisol levels, allowing your body to recover more effectively from the effects of stress. That's beneficial for everyone, but especially during pregnancy.
Your body needs cortisol. Without it, we simply couldn't function. It helps regulate your sleep-wake cycle, blood pressure, metabolism, and energy levels. However, when cortisol remains elevated for long periods, it may contribute to weight gain (particularly around the abdomen/belly), sleep disturbances, a weakened immune system, muscle breakdown, inflammation, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, and mood swings. It also affects your overall hormonal balance. During pregnancy, and especially in the postpartum period, keeping your hormones as balanced as possible is incredibly important.
Healthy for both mom and baby
Massage stimulates blood circulation, helping your body remove excess fluid and waste products more efficiently.
As you relax during the massage, your breathing naturally becomes deeper, allowing more oxygen-rich blood to reach your baby. As a result, you may notice that your little one becomes a bit more active during the treatment.
Your "feel-good" hormones, (such as oxytocin and endorphins), are also shared with your baby through the placenta, allowing your baby to relax along with you.
This sense of relaxation may also strengthen the emotional bond between mother and baby.
Are you experiencing Braxton Hicks contractions, or back- pelvic pains? Pregnancy massages may help reduce them as well. By relieving stress and muscle tension, massage can also improve your sleep quality and may even reduce nighttime muscle cramps.
Plenty of benefits!
Before You Book a Pregnancy Massage: Here's What You Need to Know
Many expectant mothers feel a little nervous about having a massage while pregnant. Those nine months can be an exciting but also uncertain time, and naturally you want to do everything you can to support a healthy pregnancy.
As you've read above, pregnancy massage can be both safe and highly beneficial. However, there are a few important things to keep in mind:
Always choose a massage therapist who is trained and certified in prenatal massage. A qualified therapist knows which positions are safest and most comfortable throughout each stage of pregnancy. They also understand which acupressure points should be avoided, as certain pressure points are connected to the lower abdomen and uterus and are traditionally used to help stimulate labor.
I personally work with these pressure points as well, and don't worry: your labor certainly won't start with "the push of a button!" ;) Still, it's important that your massage therapist knows exactly what they're doing.
There are also certain contraindications that should be taken into account before receiving a prenatal massage, such as thrombosis, certain heart conditions, or other high-risk pregnancy complications.

So...
Are you still wondering whether you should book a massage? Do you really feel like you could use one, but you're still unsure? (Hello, hormones! ;))
Hopefully this article has given you some helpful information and reassurance.
Find a certified prenatal massage therapist who can help you relax, recover, and recharge. Take good care of yourself during this special time.
Or perhaps you're looking for a thoughtful gift for your wife, sister, daughter, or a pregnant friend. A pregnancy massage is a wonderful gift to give, and an even better one to receive!
